Grande Ronde and Wallowa Steelhead are renowned for their willingness to aggressively take flies. Whether that is a top water skater, a swung traditional, or drifted nymphs, the electricity of the fight is what creates steelhead addicts and keeps them coming back for more. Steelhead begin migrating up the Grande Ronde and Wallowa Rivers in late September into the roadless Wild and Scenic Wallowa and Grande Ronde Rivers.
You would have to search far and wide for a better multi-day fly fishing experience than the roadless Wallowa and Grande Ronde Rivers. It exists in a 40 mile canyon federally designated as a wild and scenic river. Accessing this special place requires a commitment of 4-5 days in the fall to pursue steelhead but the rewards are great with beautiful unpressured runs and arguably the best river camping to be had.
A guided fly fishing trip on the roadless Wallowa and Grande Ronde Rivers is what a multi-day trip should be: Clean air filled with the smell of conifers & cottonwood. A haven from the abrasive sounds of roads and cities allowing you to hear the riffling sound of the water, birds singing on the banks, and the wings of ducks, geese, and eagles as they cut through the clean mountain air. And big, feisty wild steelhead leaping on the end of your line with a basalt rimmed canyon as the backdrop. It does not get any better than this my friend.
